Emmo Grofsmid (29 December,1951 – 6 June, 2011) and Karmin Kartowikromo (1 December, 1948– 6 June, 2011) were synonymous with a deeply rooted passion and appreciation for artists, the art in their gallery and their private collection. Known for their modest attitudes and approachable personalities, the two have left Holland’s art scene with a legacy of generosity and philanthropy.
Their field of focus was not restricted to contemporary art; through their lifetimes, they collected a distinguished array of Dutch ceramics dating from 1890 to 1940. These pieces had a prominent and appreciated place in their
apartment above the gallery. Over the past years, I had the honour of personally witnessing their passions for art and collecting, for buying pieces of quality and later for selling and auctioning. In the last Gavelers’ auction, they anonymously sold a number of pieces from their ceramic collection; the remaining objects will be for sale at the current Gavelers auction.
